Retronauts Takes On The Atari 2600

by Pedro Silva on November 19th, 2007

In celebration of both the 30th anniversary of the Video Computer System and the utter collapse of Atari (again), the Retronauts gang takes on the venerable 2600. Shane and Skip skip out this time, so we add in James Mielke, who at 37 actually was out of diapers when the VCS first shipped, which is sort of a rare thing for us. Then Jenn Frank shows up without a microphone.

Is this about as retro as Retronauts is ever going to get? Unless we talk about Odyssey, which I doubt is happening.

8-Bit Comedy Goes Prime Time With Code Monkeys Cartoon

by Pedro Silva on August 2nd, 2007

To anyone who spent their youth blowing dust out of Nintendo cartridges and developing Contra-induced carpal tunnel syndrome, Code Monkeys is ready to take your nostalgia for old-school gaming to the next level. Set in the early ’80s, gamer channel G4’s crudely pixelated cartoon follows two hapless programmers — brash code-wizard Dave and his neurotic coworker, Jerry — as they battle a demented tycoon who has just acquired their gaming company. Much like the classics it riffs on, Code quickly veers into the wildly surreal. On an average workday, lava pits imperil bathroom breaks, random fireballs cut short watercooler chatter, and floating gold coins make for a holiday bonus. “The early games, like Donkey Kong, were way trippier than the ones today,” says Code director Adam de la Pe a (who also helmed Adult Swim’s superhero send-up, Minoriteam). “You’re a plumber. A monkey kidnaps your girlfriend, and now you have to kill him.” Frame by frame, Code Monkeys is loaded with vid nods from Arkanoid to Zelda. Power up your gamer cred by naming all nine references in the scene here.

Bat above fireplace: Castlevania; coins on shelf: Super Mario Bros.; duck: Duck Hunt; dolphin: Ecco the Dolphin; sword: Ninja Gaiden; knife, grenades, treasure chest: The Legend of Zelda; banana peel: Mario Kart series; baseball bat: River City Ransom; turtle: Super Mario Bros.

Space Invader Hoodies

by Pedro Silva on July 25th, 2007

In the 80’s, there wasn’t a corner store that didn’t have a Space Invaders arcade game in it. Enthusiasts would line up their coins on the glass table console, marking their position as the next challenger in line.

Today, over 25 years later, that infamous digital design has a strong presence in urban fashion and accessories.

The hoodie is a staple for any urban wardrobe and we’re loving this unisex Space invader Hoodie. An ode to the 80s, when space invaders was the coolest game in the world and Michael Jackson was a serious artist at the top of the charts (yes, it’s hard to believe but there was such a time). The cool computer-test-pattern style graphics come in hot pink and black, giving all the generation Ys – who were just babies in the 80s – a chance to experience that fabulous fashion era for the first time.

King of Kong

by Pedro Silva on June 20th, 2007

Oh, Billy Mitchell. Even when you’re made out to be the villain in a documentary about a Donkey Kong record, or comparing yourself to the abortion issue, you still manage to win us over with your fanciful charm. The latest trailer has hit the tubes and has come complete with a new title. King of Kong shall henceforth be referred to as King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters. It’s not the greatest naming decision in the world, but we’ve most certainly heard worse.
